Helping Patients PSI Health
Recovery Journey Continues After Treatment
Successfully completing an alcohol or drug rehab program is a huge step toward restoring health and getting life back on track. But because of the chronic nature of addiction, patients need to manage their recovery, much in the same way they would manage other chronic health conditions. Managing recovery involves taking care of yourself physically, mentally and spiritually. This means getting sufficient sleep, eating healthful and satisfying foods and trying to incorporate physical activity into a daily routine to naturally boost mood. Individuals in recovery need regular check-ups and ongoing relationships with mental health professionals if they have co-occurring psychiatric or psychological conditions.
Ongoing Psychiatric Care Available
One factor known to contribute to relapse is that many patients with addiction disorders also struggle with co-occurring conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PSI Health’s board-certified psychiatrists are available to provide ongoing psychiatric care, and will collaborate with a patient’s own psychiatrist or therapist to ensure a continuum of care for mental health issues. This support is critical for patients as they transition back into their everyday lives, and can help prevent a return to drug and alcohol use over the long-term.
Alumni Activities
Friendships with sober peers who can provide support, accountability and understanding are another extremely valuable aspect of relapse prevention. PSI Health’s Alumni Group, offered through the Continuing Care Program, provides a forum for professionals in recovery to share their challenges, exchange ideas and celebrate one another’s progress.
Because most of our patients are professionals in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, they understand the pressure of managing family and work responsibilities along with addictive disorders. They can relate to one another’s struggles and successes, feel comfortable seeking and offering advice, and enjoy the bonds formed with others who have faced addiction and are working to overcome it.
Lifelong Commitment to Sobriety
Addictive substances such as alcohol and opioids cause changes in the structure of the brain that can take months if not years to heal. But steering clear of alcohol and drugs isn’t the only work addicts in recovery need to do. Through addiction treatment and therapy, many people find that truly achieving sobriety means making significant changes in their lives, including how they relate to others and how they view themselves. For some, this means revisiting early childhood events or traumas that have had a profound impact on their lives. For others, it means changes in their social and work lives and how they interact in their most significant relationships.
There is no set timeline on healing. It’s a process that takes commitment and perseverance. These are qualities that many of the highly accomplished adults who come to PSI Health have in abundance! Many of our patients are able to transfer the motivation and drive that propelled their educational attainment, their businesses or their careers into their recovery and enjoy a lifetime of health, happiness and sobriety.
